My work starts with a narrative - a story line that tugs at me, usually builds into a series of works, and exhausts itself when looked at from every possible angle. These stories can equally revolve around common objects or take their cue from political headlines. Regardless, the narratives typically evolve from a series of sketches and drawings to final painting - sometimes a straightforward process, sometimes circuitous.
Stories need their own sense of space to come to life, and consequently dimensionality matters greatly to me. Whether a landscape, still life, or the human figure, I approach them as dimensional constructions - each with a distinct architecture, texture and coloration. Experimenting with composition lets me introduce another layer of tension into the illusion of three-dimensional space.
Stories also reflect a moment in time. Whether that moment is serene and reflective, or raucous and active, each work is a freeze frame invitation to meditate on and follow the narrative.
