Painted in 2019, the series “Portraits of Resistance” was created in response to our national leader’s efforts to sow division, tribalism, and self-dealing. Inspired by the many Women’s Marches around the country and the cruelty and horror at the Southern border, the paintings explore a narrative of righteous and rightful resistance. I painted women into the front lines, into the trenches, because they were most directly affected, and I armed them with metaphorical weapons: sticks and stones.

This series chronicles my interest in – or obsession with – the transience and impermanence of objects relative to each other and to us. The existence of stones is measured in billions of years, whereas a branch becomes a stick in the blink of an eye. It is the juxtaposition of these objects with very different lifespans that challenges the concept of time and existence. Through intentional composition and design, I try to elevate these common objects to an iconic stature; to imbue them with greater meaning than their simplicity would imply.

I painted the “Four Elements” portraits of my sons and their partners during the COVID days – that surreal period of forced isolation and life in my little “family bubble.” I had ample time to conceive of narratives and symbolism around earth, wind, fire, and water; to lavish attention on clothing, especially the scarves they wear; and conjure up land- and sky scapes to tie the images together. More than portraits, together they reference the essential elements on which to build a more hopeful tomorrow.
